Building on the knowledge gained in the 4-week introductory series I offered in September and early October, we continue to work with 16th- and 15th-century sources. The goal is to gain deeper understanding, practical application, and greater levels of comfort and fluency with historical clefs and ligature reading, as well as some first experiences with the specifics rules guiding triple mensurations, specifically tempus perfectum prolatio minor (mensuration O).

Wednesdays: More Matteo!

October 28, November 4, 11, & 18, December 2 & 9

The Wednesday notation classes will continue the exploration of Matteo da Perugia’s music. Matteo da Perugia’s works belongs to the short-lived flowering of a beautiful late medieval genre known today as “ars subtilior”. His music is preserved in Modena A and other sources, and contains both secular and sacred compositions. Matteo da Perugia was the first magister capellae at the Milan Cathedral from 1402-1407, and one of his patrons was the antipope Alexander V.
Prerequisites: The Wednesdays series is geared towards experienced readers of early notation, who have at the minimum completed my two introductory series, or possess equivalent knowledge. If in doubt, feel free to contact me to see if this series would be right for you.
